Functional Specifications

Purpose

Creating a new technology based business or project is very exciting and more than likely there will be a many ideas and opportunities. The first step in creating a such a project is to collate these ideas into a set of Business Requirements.

The purpose of a Functional Specification is to then translate the Business Requirements into a set of features and behavior for a working system. The functional specification is a blue print of how the system will operate and behave. It is an excellent tool to formally describe business ideas to a technical team and a well written functional specification will form the basis of of the technical design to be implemented by the technical team.

A Functional Specification will be developed to include:

  • Choice of Technologies (Computer language, Database technology, Hosting platform)
  • List of Functional Features
  • Software and Database Designs
  • Project Budget and Time Line
  • Project Issues Registrar
  • Ongoing Hosting and Support Plan

Deliverables

The Functional Specification will formally describe a software system to the point where it can be developed by any technical team.

The functional specification will include screen mock ups and database design.

Importantly the functional specification will enable the business owners to understand how the system will operate on paper before beginning software development work. This is the cheapest and and in fact fastest way to develop a software system.

Additional the functional specification will allow the technical team to provide a fixed price quotation for complete development of the software system, since the features and behaviour have been formally defined.
