Website Usability
The Internet is guided by a set of standards developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).
W3C is an Industry Consortium lead by the creator of the Internet Tim Berners Lee with the mission: To lead the World Wide Web to its full potential by developing protocols and guidelines that ensure long-term growth for the Web.
The key goals of W3C are:
- To develop the web to allow access to as many people as possible whatever their hardware, software, network infrastructure, native language, culture, geographical location, or physical or mental ability.
- To develop the web so that it can be accessed by as many devices as possible including smart phones, televison, phone systems and domestic appliances.
- To develop the web as a knowledge base
- To enable the web to be a technology that is trusted, secure and protects the privacy of its users
How does this translate to my website?
By adhering to the standards set by the W3C websites can be designed to be:
- Faster
- Forward-compatible with future standards, and more likely to work with Internet enabled devices such as smart phones and domestic appliances
- Be more easily found on search engines
- Be more accessible to users with disabilities
- Allow easier maintenance through the separation of site content and presentation elements.
